CONCRETE BALUSTER INFORMATION

Concrete is a construction material that consists, in its most common form, of Portland cement, construction aggregate (generally gravel and sand) and water.

Concrete does not solidify from drying after mixing and placement; the water reacts with the cement in a chemical process known as hydration. This water is absorbed by the cement, which hardens, bonding the other components together and eventually creating a stone-like material.

HOW TO MAKE A CONCRETE BALUSTER

I finger tighten everything, I do not use hand tools in this process. To release the molds there is no prying. The top part of the mold is released when the bolt are unscrewed and the bottom is released by the rebar. All work is done with care. They are my babies. I work with one mold at a time. First I wipe the outside ( This keeps it clean and is an inspection process ). Next I remove the bolts, they are placed in a container and spraid with WD 40. I release the mold and wipe it clean. After it is wiped clean I oil the inside including the inner lip with vegetable oil. This is done with a dish spong. I then place the two halves together. I place the bolts back into the molds. These are finger tighten, then I go around again. This completes the process. I go to the next mold. ( This way both halves of the molds stay together ).  After the set (4 molds) is prepared, I'm ready for the concrete.

 

I wet the inside of the mixer and place a 60 pound bag of ready mix cement (sand/Cement). I turn on the machine and monitor the mixing process. I add water by spray as needed. This gives a consistent slurry. 

 

The next step is to place a 3/8 rebar in to the mold and fill the  mold with concrete. I place the mold on a cement block next to the mixer. I insert the rebar, the rebar is precut and extends past the mold on both ends. Concrete is placed into the mold. This prosess is done by hand with the use of rubber gloves. I use the cement and shake method as followed in the manufactures handout. When conpleted, the mold is taken to the side to cure and an empty mold takes it's place. This process is repeated   (3 - 60 Lbs. = 4 molds). It take about 2 hours to complete a set. This includes clean up and prep work for the rebar. 

 

The next morning the process starts again. It's all just another brick in the wall.
