Florida Keys Indians
When the first people to enter the Florida peninsula around 12,000 years ( Wisconsin Glaciation Period ) ago they were not explorers, adventurers, or settlers. They were nomads following the game animals upon which their survival depended. At time the sea level was lower and rainfall less plentiful than today. As a result, the Florida peninsula was more than twice as large as it is now. Mastodons, camels, mammoths, bison, and horses roamed vast grasslands in search of food and fresh water.Evidence of the Indian habitation in the Florida Keys dates back 3000 years ago. It is believe that the Keys were inhabitated earlier than that, but any archeological evidence of such early Indian settlement is under water.
The Calusa Indians who inhabited southwest Florida perhaps as early as 1450 B.C.The Calusa Indians were descendants of Paleo-Indians who inhabited Southwest Florida approximately 12,000 years ago. They were originally called the "Calos" which means "Fierce People". The Calusa tribe is described as warlike. They cultivated the ground to a limited extent, but were outstanding hunters and fishermen. Noted as expert sailors, daring seamen, traveled Florida from the islands, and to Cuba or perhaps Mexico. Twenty 20 foot dugout canoes were made from huge cypress trees. These large canoes of hallowed out cypress logs were used to travel and to fish. The common food for the Calusa was fish, turtle, and snails. They also hunted animals and gathered dozens of different wild plants for food and medicine. The Calusa were determined fighters. The warriors gained tributes of food from smaller tribes.
The Calusa people lived on the sandy shores of the coast and along the inner waterways of Florida's southwest coast. These Indians controlled most of south Florida. The population of this tribe may have reached as many as 50,000 people. The Calusa men were tall and well built with long hair. The men went nearly naked, wore only tanned breech clouts of deerskin fastened with intricate belts to show their position in the tribe.Women dressed in woven Spanish moss and palmetto leaf garments. Calusa had a complex social and political organization. In charge were the hereditary chief and the dolman or priest. With elaborate rituals with synchronized singing and processions of masked priests. Inside a great temple the walls are covered by carved and painted wooden masks. The Calusa chief had the power of life and death over his subjects. It was thought that the chief and priest are able to intercede with the spirits that sustained the environment's bounty. The Calusa chief demanded obedience from all villagers. They seem to have practiced human sacrifice of captives, scalped and dismembered their slain enemies, and have been accused of being cannibals.
The Calusa territory reached from Charlotte Harbor to Cape Sable, and included the Florida Keys, and extending inland to Lake Okeechobee. Florida Keys is an archipelago of about 1700 islands in the southeast United States. They begin at the southeastern tip of the Florida peninsula, about 15 miles south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. The islands lie along the Florida Straights, dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the west, and defining one edge of Florida Bay. At the nearest point, the southern tip of Key West is just 90 miles from Cuba.
Their written history begins in 1513 when, with a fleet of 80 canoes they boldly attacked Ponce de León, who was about to land on their coast, and after an all-day fight compelled him, to withdraw. Even at this early date they were already noted among the tribes for the golden wealth which they had accumulated from the numerous Spanish wrecks cast away upon the keys in passage from the south, and two centuries later they were regarded as veritable pirates, plundering and killing without mercy the crews of all vessels.
Over two centuries the Calusa’s relations with the Spaniards changed from wariness and hostility to a solid alliance with them against other Europeans. During the final fifty years of Calusa existence as a culture, other Native Americans, acting as agents of European opportunists, literally pushed the Calusa into the sea.
Excavations on Key Marco (next to Marco Island) revealed an amazing quantity of tools, weapons, utensils, masks and wood carvings preserved in a layer of organic mud within a Calusa Indian shell mound. The Calusa were judiciously savage warriors but were delicate artists as well, producing exquisite wooden bowls, masks, figurines, gorgets, and carved bone ornaments. Once the Calusa got a hold of these Spanish metals, which they could find in shipwrecks, the civilization seemed to go through a bit of an artistic golden age for a few hundred years The Calusa are the best known group of South Florida Indian tribes and their vast domain was ruled by a single chief. Although lacking agriculture, the Calusa developed elaborate political, social and trade networks.
Sandfly Island about one mile offshore from the Gulf Coast ranger station in Everglades City is a 75 acre shell mound built in a donut shape with a narrow opening which allows water to flood the interior at high tide. It is believed that when the tide receded the Calusa stretched nets across the opening to catch fish and other marine animals. Calusa harvested over fifty species of fish, and more than twenty kinds of mollusks and crustaceans. They ate shellfish, crabs, land and sea turtles, birds, deer, rodents and other animals.
What was the Calusa Indians' fate? The Calusa Indians lived and thrived along the coast of Southwest Florida. They lived in harmony with the Southwest Florida environment. They depended on the estuary for most of their food. They ate pinfish grunt, mullet, sheepshead, and catfish as well as oysters, clams, whelks, and conchs. They were weakened and killed by diseases like smallpox, brought in by European explorers. Some of the calusa indians were enslaved and taken away.. By the late 1700s they had vanished from this area. This culter was lost. Replaced by spanish indians, descendents of Creek,Yamassee and other northern groups that had migrated into Florida.Only their shell mounds remain.
The Calusa were the last native Florida Indian people to succumb to colonization. But by the mid-1700s they had disappeared entirely. This describes the Calusa. The artifacts left behind, the plants and animals that inhabited the landscape and the underwater world of their ecosystem. It also discussed in traditions that survive to the present day among modern fisherfolk and in the culture of Native Americans in south Florida--the Seminole and Miccosukee peoples.
“It is important to remember America’s Everglades begin in central Florida, flowing through the Kissimmee River, down to Lake Okeechobee and the River of Grass.”

A hurricane is a tropical system with maximum sustained winds of at least 74 mph. At the center of the hurricane is an "eye" that varies in size but is commonly 20 to 30 miles wide. While the storm itself may extend out from the eye several hundred miles, hurricane force winds (74 mph) routinely extend 50 to 100 miles out of the eye. Atlantic hurricanes "spin" in a counter clockwise rotation that is started by the rotation of the earth.
