Jimmy Buffett (born in Mississippi, but raised in Alabama) singer-songwriter, comedian, romantic individualist, eccentric and drunkard. He has made a career by selling a state of mind.
Jimmy's own words describe his early days:
"I got into music basically to meet girls, no doubt about it. Women have always been an influence on my music, good and bad. It looked like the greatest job in the world. I was in college at the time, a freshman at Auburn University. I was a shy, awkward kid from Mobile, kind of a wallflower. My roommate had a guitar, and even though he knew only three chords, he always seemed to be the center of attention with women. I said, 'Teach me those chords'."
Went to Nashville, in search of glory. His early albums Down To Earth (Barnaby, 1970) and High Cumberland Jubilee (Barnaby, 1971), later compiled as Before The Beach (MCA, 1993) .
After moving to Florida, Buffett started his mission in life.

But the basis of the business empire that keeps him on the Fortune magazine list of highest-earning entertainers is his music.
Jimmy Buffett' Margarita
1. Fill shaker with broken cubed ice.
2. Squeeze TWO fresh lime wedges into shaker.
3. Add 2 oz. Cuervo 1800.
4. Add 1/2 oz. of Jose Cuervo White
5. Add 1-1/4 oz. of Roses Lime Juice .
6. Add 1/2 oz. of Bols Triple Sec
7. Add "a splash" of Bols Orange Curaco
8. Cover shaker tightly!
9. Shake vigorously.
10. Rim glass with Lime peel (outside only!).
11. Salt the outside only.
12. Add fresh ice.
13. Strain mixture over ice.
14. Squeeze in 1 lime wedge .
15. You are now in Margaritville, kick back, and enjoy!

Jimmy wrote this song about a Bartender in Key West. While he was having a drink , a bartender told him about his life. Supposebly, Jimmy wrote this as an ode to this 40-something he met back in the late 60's
High Times: What did you think of High Times singling you out as the smugglers' favorite?
Buffett: As long as I don't get arrested, that's fine. I guess everybody would like be a smuggler. I mean, it's a fascinating thing, right? It's adventurous, romantic, swashbuckling. There's something about going to sea there's this mystery and romance that I think is carried over in literature and music.

A Pirate Looks At FiftyWe are indeed the people our parents warned us against! Our generation, the Boomers, we have been through a lot. They were the best of times. They were the worst of times. We are now approaching the summer of our years. Part of that stage of life is reflecting on what we have done and what we will do with tommorrow. We are growing older, but are younger then that now. |
Baby Boomers were (and in many cases still are) the hippies, Flower Children, the 'dreamers' that believed in peace, love, rock & roll - tune in - turn on. Baby Boomers took to the streets to protest everything from civil rights, to animal rights, to foreign wars. We promoted free love, burned bras, staged sit-ins/love-ins and tried to legalize… legalize (pause... remembers) oh, yeah— pot. We flashed peace signs, grew our hair long, burned our bras, ahhh... memories. We followed Timothy Leary, thought eight track players were cool <sigh>, listened to the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Janis, The Grateful Dead (oh... so many more). Ya we’ve raised quite a bit of hell during our half-century or so. You name it, we’ve done it, drank it, smoked it... Our history lives in our music, books, movies, television shows, and clothing.

For hundreds of years people watched sunsets from the west side of Key West. This is where every night the sun goes down in glory. It was said that the tradition of applause as the last piece of the sun disappears behind the horizon, was started by Tennessee Williams while sitting down with a gin and tonic.
In the sixties when the counter culture movement began and "hippies" started their quest for paradise. Keys became a place to be.
The contemporary incarnation of SUNSET CELEBRATION really took off in the late 1960's as groups of carefree gypsies descended upon Key West and Mallory Pier in search of paradise. The way that the sunset ceremony got started is that all the "freaks" as drug users were called in the sixties, used to go down every evening high on LSD to watch Atlantis arising mythically out of the cloud formations at sunset. There wereabout 30-40 regulars many of whom lived in Fogarty house which at that time was full of hippies.
Sunset Celebration takes place at Mallory Square in Key West, Florida. The participants of this Key West attraction consist of arts and crafts exhibitors, street performers, food carts, psychics and of course the thousands of tourists from around the world who visit this Key West art show. Each night around two hours before sunset masses of people, both locals and tourists alike, flock to the water's edge to experience a multicultural happening and to watch the sun sink into the Gulf of Mexico.
Mallory Square is located at the north end of Duval, Whitehead and Front Streets, along Wall Street. Facing out onto the Gulf of Mexico, it's a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike to toast each evening's sunset.
