John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park on Key Largo, Florida, is one of my favorite state parks in the U.S. It's also one of the nation's most unique parks. It was created in 1963 and is the oldest state park in the Florida Keys. It was also the first undersea park in the U.S. and protects the only coral reef in the continental United States.

John Pennekamp Park is twenty-one nautical miles long and 18 nautical miles wide.This park is the most popular place for snorkeling and scuba diving in the United States. Most of the park is underwater and not on land, Pennekamp is a permanent refuge for 650 species of tropical reef fish (such as neon-colored queen angels, grunts, snapper, and grouper), and more than 25 kinds of coral. This park was the first underwater park in the nation,it is world-famous. Canon Beach, which features remnants of an early Spanish shipwreck 100 feet offshore. Canoeing and kayaking through the park´s waters are popular activities. Key Largo's popularity is the natural treasure found offshore. The kayak trails out from Key Largo to the warm shallow waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the reefs and wrecks submerged below. The park contains a wide variety of tropical vegetation, shore birds and marine life. With mangrove swamps and tropical hammocks. Paddling through the calm channels of the mangroves is great for observing the natural habitats of varieties of birds and fish.The park also has a beach, picnic areas, a 30,000-gallon aquarium and museum, and two nature trails, and overnight camping.
RED MANGROVE - THE WALKING TREE Species Name: Rhizophora mangle L.

Mangroves form an interesting environment along the coastline.This is were the sea and land blend together. The mangrove is one of the few trees that thrive in salt water. Seeds of the red mangrove start sprouting while on the tree. Later the seeds drop off and are destined by the tide.

Typically found along the water's edge, the red mangrove can be identified by its tangled, reddish colored roots called "prop-roots." Prop roots extending from the trunk of the red mangrove stabilize the the tree in the soft mud.This massive system of the red mangrove prop roots in the swamp lines the sea edge, forming a protective barrier against storms.

Mangrove coast produces an unique environment by blending land and sea. Mangroves grow along many of the worlds tropical and subtropical coastlines. The mangroves arching prop root system traps silt and detritus, eventually building up islands of dry land.

Mangrove Food Chain: The leaves from the mangrove tree fall year round. They quickly decompose. This provides food for small organisms. These small organisms are food for small animals. The small animals provide food for larger animals such as birds, fish and people.

Mangroves form an interesting environment involving a maze of tidal creeks and countless islands, with endless shorelines. This hardy tropical tree is home to a variety of wildlife. They find food and shelter in the mangroves. Their roots help stablize the shoreline and filter pollutants. Birds build nest in the branches of these trees.

Natural History

Adapted to aquatic conditions, the mangrove grows "with its roots in the water." Stilt roots support the plant above the water, and other roots extend up toward the surface and aid in aeration. Prop roots possess numerous lenticels (air pores) on their surfaces. The lenticels are continuous with air filled spaces which connect with underground root structures to provide their aeration.

Aerial roots are also produced which help the plant breathe. Aerial roots are uniform in thickness, do not take root even after penetrating the soil and are produced by the lower branches.

The roots and stems of the plant can grow immediately on contact with soil. The Red Mangrove utilizes an internal salt pump to exclude salt ions. This is the means by which the plant survives the saline environment. The "pump" is a cellular process where by the element magnesium (Mg) is taken into the plant's cells, forcing out sodium (Na) ions.

Mangroves absorb nutrients from the water in order to grow, and help lower nitrates and phosphates. They export the unneeded nutrients and excess salt through their leaves. When leaves are dropped from the plant and decay. The nutrients are exchanged back to the water and soil.

The red mangrove is one of the three mangrove species found in the mangrove ecological community. The other species within this community are the white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa), and black mangrove (Avicennia germinans). The red mangrove is the most noticeable of the three Florida mangrove trees. It grows in the deepest water and its arching prop roots support the tree above the water as if it were walking on stilts. Red mangroves have leaves which are somewhat larger and shinier than those of other mangroves. They are further distinguished by their fruits, or propagules, which are long and pencil-shaped. While these may resemble seed pods, they are actually embryonic root structures.

Cannon Beach - small, narrow beach of sand with cannon placed in the entrances. There's a replica of a seventeenth-century shipwreck just 130 from the beach - you can snorkel there. Plenty of interesting fish and it's fun looking down at the "wreck". Bring the beach towel,snorkel gear,cooler with drinks and food. Far Beach - also at Pennekamp, is close by down Largo Sound. We found this beach to be the best of the pair. It has natural shade with transplanted coconut palms and looks nicer.

Descriptive Information

Field Marks: "Leaves are opposite, entire, leathery, and elliptic. Flowers have four yellowish to white petals, borne in clusters of two or three at the leaf axils. The fruit is brown and egg shaped, germinating while still attached to the tree and sending out a distinctive, cigar-shaped seedling."
Size: "Evergreen shrub or small tree to about 25 m in height."
General Habitat: " Lives in shallow salt water, found on every salt water coast and bay."
Geographical Range: "Confined to shallow waters of coastal bays, lagoons, creeks, and rivers; from Levy and Volusia counties southward and throughout the Keys."
