Head south from Miami along US #1 (a.k.a. The Overseas Highway). Distance is measured by mile markers, the closer to Key West the smaller the number. The “wows” and “ARRS” start as Homestead fades in the rear view mirror.

Driving the thin ribbon of highway from Key Largo to Key West, there is a marked difference in the view out of the left and right windows. The dive boats and blue water fishing charters moor on the east side where they can quickly get out to the deep waters of the Atlantic.

Looking out the passenger side towards the Gulf offers a much different vista. There are Olive-green mangrove swamps, uninhabited islands and meandering canals make up the sub-tropical paradise known as the back-country,

KEY LARGO  different type of place. You can feel the can of attitude with the change in latitude Key Largo is the first, largest, and most visited tropical island of the spectacular Florida Keys. It is known as the “Dive Capital of the World.” The Coral Reef and getting into or under the water is what makes a trip to Key Largo worthwhile.

The Dive Capital of the World!  lThe Spiegel Grove a large shipwreck approximately five miles offshore from Key Largo on the Atlantic side of the Keys. This retired Navy ship was intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef. The Spiegel Grove is a 510 foot ship, the largest ever sunk to create an artificial reef! She lies at Dixie Shoals just off of Key Largo. Most of the Spiegel Grove can be explored at depths of 50-85 ft, but you can also see it just by snorkeling.

 John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (MM 102.5 Oceanside), a major area attraction, has spectacular  Coral Reef  wildlife that cannot be found anywhere in the United States except in the Keys. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park has nature trails,two beaches and a replica of a shipwreck in the water that is great for snorkeling. You can take a glass-bottom boat ride over part of the reef, go on a snorkeling tour via motorboat or sailing catamaran, as well as rent a canoe or see-through raft. The beach has two great nature trails for hiking, and some of the subtropical fish can even be seen from shore.

The waters surrounding Key Largo are teeming with game fish. You can go after the big ones with a Key Largo charter boat captain, or fish with a backcountry guide in the waters of Florida Bay or the Everglades.

Key Largo Hammocks State Botanical site, with its unusual plants and wildlife, is one of the best places on the island for a sheltered bike ride. Birdwatchers won’t be disappointed. KEY LARGO BEACHES AND PARKS

DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANT - This bird is 33 inches tall. The bird looks black with a green tint. It has a narrow, hooked bill.The skin on the throat is orange. The cormorant spreads its wings to dry when at rest. Nest in mangrove trees. Habitat - coastal areas and large inland waterways.   ****    COMMON FROM KEY WEST TO KEY LARGO
