In 1852, day markers were placed along the Keys. Each marker was an iron pole thirty-six feet high with a large barrel fastened to the top. They were all painted a different color and could be seen for a couple of miles by eye. They were later upgraded with painted metal cylinders and included a letter on each one.

USS ALLIGATOR, captain, Lt. John M. Dale, after remaing by her three days, using every exertion to get her off, but to no purpose, and expecting any moment that she would go to pieces, I was forced ... to come to the resolution of abandoning her and making an encampment on one of the Keys.
Lieutenant Dale decided to blow his rather than leave intact anything that could be used by the pirates. He ordered all government property, including cannons, transferred to the Ann Maria. This was not difficult but heartbreaking work for a crew already saddened by the recent death of their former captain, William H. Allen.

… composed of a framework of 9 iron piles, occupying the center and angular point of an octagon of 50 feet diameter and taper from 50 feet at the base to 19 feet at the top. The dwelling house is the frustum of a cone, the sides having the same inclination as the Piles. The floor is 33 feet above the low water, and the house of two stories is 20 feet high. From the top of the house to the Lantern is a Cylindrical Tower for a stairway 38 feet high. The whole structure is painted Red – except the Piles which are Black – and the doors and windows of the dwelling and roof of the Lantern which are white.
The Carysfort Reef Lighthouse was designed by I.W.P. Lewis, the nephew of Winslow Lewis. The interchangeable parts were manufactured in 1848 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a construction crew was trained there. Major Thomas B. Linnard was the engineer in charge when construction of the lighthouse. He died before the tower was completed. Lieutenant George Meade was brought in to finish the project.
Carysfort Reef Light is said to house the ghost of a former keeper, Captain Johnson.

Before the lighthouse, ships tended to sail by day and near coasts. Natural landmarks, and the use of the stars were the navigational aids to mariners. Some primitive maps and charts were used, which gave water depths measured by lead line and contemporary anchors on a rope. Some early cultures developed crude compasses and other devices to navigate.
One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World was a lighthouse--the famous Pharos of Alexandria, Egypt. It is the first one that is recorded in history and was built about 280 BC. Those records tell us that it was the tallest one ever built -- 450 ft. (comparable to a 45-story skyscraper) and used an open fire at the top as a source of light. It was lighted by a wood fire and showed smoke by day and a glow by night.
Early lighthouses were simple structures, based on a form known as the "fustrum of a cone." They were round or polygonal toweres with thick masonary walls, few windows and ornamentation. Of moderate height and utilitarian design, they were made by local craftspeople using local materials (wood, cut stone or rubble, brick or granite). There were few people in America with formal architectural or engineer training. The first college courses were at the U.S. Military Academy. From 1850 to 1880 West Point graduates provided most of the know-how in improved and varied lighthouse construction.
The lighthouse and its keeper is a romantic idea inspiring paintings, poems and songs. But, the best of all are the stories. Lighthouses were developed as a result of ships traveling on perilous waters, only to fall victim to rocks or unseen shoals.
A navigational aid, also called an aid to navigation, is anything that assists a mariner in the course of his passage on the sea. Today, there are many kinds of navigational aids, of which lighthouses are but one example. Indeed, it is the invention of new navigational aids that is threatening the very future of lighthouses, the electronic aid known as Global Positioning by Satellite (GPS), being the most obvious one. People often think that if they have a GPS device they don't need lighthouses any more.
Florida is famous for its fabled Spanish treasure galleons. Florida's coastline is dotted with more colonial Spanish wrecks than any other state in the nation, primarily because of three treasure fleet disasters. In 1622, 1715, and again in 1733, Spain suffered horrible economic blows when the treasure fleets or flotas entered Florida waters and were destroyed by hurricanes. The 1622 fleet was scattered across the lower Florida Keys and the Dry Tortugas. The 1715 fleet wrecked along the Atlantic coast of southern Florida, on what is now known as the Treasure Coast. And finally, the 1733 fleet met its fate along the upper Florida Keys, from modern Grassy Key to upper Key Largo.

A hurricane is a tropical system with maximum sustained winds of at least 74 mph. At the center of the hurricane is an "eye" that varies in size but is commonly 20 to 30 miles wide. While the storm itself may extend out from the eye several hundred miles, hurricane force winds (74 mph) routinely extend 50 to 100 miles out of the eye. Atlantic hurricanes "spin" in a counter clockwise rotation that is started by the rotation of the earth.
