UPPER KEYS LIGHTHOUSES

Lighthouse warned ships of the invisible danger posed by the submerged reef.
Lighthouses were built along the Florida Keys  to prevent shipwrecks along the reef.
North America’s only coral barrier reef  about six miles seaward of the Florida Keys, a 220-mile long string of islands extending south and west of the Florida mainland.

In 1852, day markers were placed along the Keys. Each marker was  an iron pole thirty-six feet high with  a large barrel fastened to the top. They were all painted a different color and could be seen for a couple of miles by eye. They were later upgraded with painted metal cylinders and included a letter on each one.

The Gulf Stream, originates in the Gulf of Mexico, rushes through the Straights of Florida, and then turns north along the Florida Keys. Ships traveling from the Gulf to the Atlantic Seaboard use the current to aid their progress. Vessels running in the opposite direction often hug the reefs along portions of the Keys to avoid the Gulf Stream and to pick up a slight southerly coastal current.

ALLIGATOR REEF LIGHT

Location: FOUR MILES EAST OF INDIAN KEY , NEAR MATECUMBE KEY
Station Established: 1873

Accommodations Ocean Pointe Hotel Condominiam Rental.

The Alligator Reef lighthouse is 136 feet tall. It marks a very large reef structure offshore of Upper Matecumbe Key. Depths range from a shallow 8 feet to just over 40 feet. In 1870, Congress allocate funds to build a lighthouse, The iron pile lighthouse was forged by Paulding Kemble of Cold Spring, New York, and then transported to Indian Key .It is a white octagonal pyramid skeleton framework on black pile foundation, enclosing a square dwelling and a stair-cylinder. The lantern is black. It was completed in 1873.

During the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, keepers at Alligator Reef Lighthouse survived 200-mile-per-hour winds and a 20-foot storm surge.

This shallow barrier reef runs in a northwesterly direction about 20 feet from the seaward side of the Lighthouse. The bank is covered with small hard corals and many soft corals such as purple sea fans, sea whips, and sea plumes.
USS Alligator - schooner measuring 86 feet from bow to stern,  was outfitted with twelve guns. The ship was used to intercept ships engaged in the by then illegal importation of slaves to the United States and to the secure territory. During the evening of November 19, 1821 the vessel ran aground off Matacumbee Key.The reef was subsequently named as Alligator Reef in honor of its victim. Today the Alligator's broken and scattered remains lie in the sand 100 yards offshore of Alligator lighthouse .

Alligator Reef Light, Florida. First lit in 1873, it was automated in 1963. Its Fresnel lens was removed and eventually replaced with a rotating plastic optic.

CARYSFORT REEF LIGHT

Location: Carysfort Reef, near Key Largo
Station Established: 1825

A lightship was in this location from 1825 to 1852. The Carysfort Lighthouse marks the main body of the four mile long Carysfort Reef system. The lighthouse is the oldest functioning lighthouse of its type in the United States. It's an impressive 112 foot tall structure constructed in 1852.

… composed of a framework of 9 iron piles, occupying the center and angular point of an octagon of 50 feet diameter and taper from 50 feet at the base to 19 feet at the top. The dwelling house is the frustum of a cone, the sides having the same inclination as the Piles. The floor is 33 feet above the low water, and the house of two stories is 20 feet high. From the top of the house to the Lantern is a Cylindrical Tower for a stairway 38 feet high. The whole structure is painted Red – except the Piles which are Black – and the doors and windows of the dwelling and roof of the Lantern which are white.

The Carysfort Reef Lighthouse was designed  by I.W.P. Lewis, the nephew of Winslow Lewis. The interchangeable parts were manufactured in 1848 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a construction crew was trained there. Major Thomas B. Linnard was the engineer in charge when construction of the lighthouse. He died before the tower was completed. Lieutenant George Meade was brought in to finish the project.

The lighthouse had eighteen lamps set in twenty-one-inch reflectors. In 1855, the array of lamps was replaced by a Fresnel Lens. It was automated in 1960 and in 1962, its Fresnel lens was removed in favor of a Vega VRB-25 optic which is solar-powered.

Since 1852 Carysfort Lighthouse off north Key Largo has stood watch over two reefs, Carysfort and Carysfort South. Carysfort Reef is part of the National Marine Sanctuary System. It is marked by a 112-foot lighthouse tower and 11 mooring buoys. Buoys C7 through C11 are located on the shore side of the tower and mark a shallow coral reef. The elkhorn reef crest is the shallowest area of the reef and is often exposed during low tide. The fragile elkhorn and antler corals  are the fastest-growing of the corals.

Carysfort Reef Light is said to house the ghost of a former keeper, Captain Johnson.

Before the lighthouse, ships tended to sail by day and near coasts.  Natural landmarks, and the use of the stars were the navigational aids to mariners. Some primitive maps and charts were used, which gave water depths measured by lead line and contemporary anchors on a rope.  Some early cultures developed crude compasses and other devices to navigate.

One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World was a lighthouse--the famous Pharos of Alexandria, Egypt. It is the first one that is recorded in history and was built about 280 BC. Those records tell us that it was the tallest one ever built -- 450 ft. (comparable to a 45-story skyscraper) and used an open fire at the top as a source of light. It was lighted by a wood fire and showed smoke by day and a glow by night.

Early lighthouses were simple structures, based on a form known as the "fustrum of a cone." They were round or polygonal toweres with thick masonary walls, few windows and ornamentation. Of moderate height and utilitarian design, they were made by local craftspeople using local materials (wood, cut stone or rubble, brick or granite). There were few people in America with formal architectural or engineer training. The first college courses were at the U.S. Military Academy. From 1850 to 1880 West Point graduates provided most of the know-how in improved and varied lighthouse construction.

The lighthouse and its keeper is a romantic idea inspiring paintings, poems and songs.  But, the best of all are the stories.  Lighthouses were developed as a result of ships traveling on perilous waters, only to fall victim to rocks or unseen shoals.

A navigational aid, also called an aid to navigation, is anything that assists a mariner in the course of his passage on the sea. Today, there are many kinds of navigational aids, of which lighthouses are but one example. Indeed, it is the invention of new navigational aids that is threatening the very future of lighthouses, the electronic aid known as Global Positioning by Satellite (GPS), being the most obvious one. People often think that if they have a GPS device they don't need lighthouses any more.

A hurricane is a tropical system with maximum sustained winds of at least 74 mph. At the center of the hurricane is an "eye" that varies in size but is commonly 20 to 30 miles wide. While the storm itself may extend out from the eye several hundred miles, hurricane force winds (74 mph) routinely extend 50 to 100 miles out of the eye. Atlantic hurricanes "spin" in a counter clockwise rotation that is started by the rotation of the earth.
