Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park, the park has approximately 1.5 miles of trails that wind through a tropical hardwood hammock. Along the trails, visitors are able to observe over 40 species of trees and plants that are native to the Florida Keys. With the aid of a guidebook, numbered trail stops, and interpretive markers, it is easy for visitors to learn about the natural and cultural resources of the site. Ranger-guided tours are also available.
Henry Flagler, who built the Overseas Railway that once connected the Florida Keys, first mined the Key Largo Limestone at Windley Key and adjacent quarries in the early 1900s. The rock was used for commercial construction purposes and decorative facing stone. Mining ceased in the early 1960s. It was near the Windley Key quarry that the Flagler Station was located. Use of the railroad ended in 1935 when a Category 5 storm swept the train from the tracks, killing more than 400 people. JOHN PENNEKAMP PARK KEY LARGO - BIKE TRAIL

The park is home to 84 protected species of plants and animals, including wild cotton, mahogany mistletoe, and the American crocodile. Exploring the park´s trails gives visitors a chance to see some of these rare species of plants and animals. Over six miles of nature trails provide a wealth of opportunities for birdwatchers and photographers. Florida Keys hammock soils are predominantly organic, with a very minor mineral component. The evolution of both forest and soil development ends and begins with fire. Fire consumes virtually all organic material down to the limestone surface. During the time required for the species replacement sequence to take place, the barren, rocky post-disturbance surface becomes blanketed by a spongy, organic substrate of 10-20 cm depth. Thin as it is, such a soil provides markedly different seedbed conditions and enhanced rooting volume in comparison to the rockland substrate over which it formed, and is able to absorb several times its weight in water. Augmentation of soil moisture-holding capacity may be especially important for Key Largo hammock species, These subtropical trees generally acquire most of their water from surface sediments rather than deeper groundwater sources that may be brackish in quality. Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammocks Botanical State Park is one of the largest contiguous tracts (2,304 acres) of tropical West Indian hardwood hammock in the United States. Once a dominant habitat type in the Florida Keys and southern tip of Florida’s peninsula, this West Indian plant community was originally established largely by migratory birds. Northbound migrant songbirds, having fed on the fruits of trees and shrubs in the Bahamas, Greater Antilles, and Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, often carry seeds in their digestive tract. Most of the park’s two miles of trails are paved and accessible to both bicycles and wheelchairs. Signs along a self-guided nature trail provide information about the park´s ecosystem and wildlife; ranger-guided tours are also available. The elusive American crocodile and indigo snake are just two of the many rare and endangered species found in this hikers paradise..Many tropical species of birds are resident here, including the white-crowned pigeon, mangrove cuckoo and black-whiskered vireo. Tropical vagrants such as the thick-billed vireo and La Sagra’s flycatcher are frequently reported in the park. This park is part of approximately 178 nautical square miles of coral reefs, mangrove swamps, and seagrass beds, an impressive collection of mature tropical hammocks. This Is what we call the Florida Keys.
