It cannot be overstated that before you begin, have someone who is experienced show you the rigging on the sail boat. All boats are different but some things are the same. This will cover the hardware presented on most small sailboats and common sailing techniques and the many definitions of terms that you will need. You should know the names of the different pieces of hardware on the boat, all the lines, and should learn to rig the boat by yourself.

Sailing is the art of controlling a boat with large pieces of canvas cloth called sails. By changing the rigging, rudder, and dagger or centre board, a sailor manages the force of the wind on the sails in order to change the direction and speed of a boat. Mastery of the skill requires experience in varying wind and sea conditions, as well as knowledge concerning sailboats.

All great sailors share one common trait -- knowing that they don't know it all. Every trip out of the slip is a potential learning experience. Every article or book contains something new. From a different way to tie a familiar knot to someone else's idea of a properly trimmed sail, it's worth knowing about.

The  Nonsuch Sailboat  line of catboats is a series of popular cruising sailboats built between 1978 and the mid-1990s by Hinterhoeller Yachts in St. Catharines, Ontario. The Nonsuch Sailboat is the inspiration of Gordon Fisher, who with yacht designer Mark Ellis approached George Hinterhoeller to build a comfortable cruising boat.  This idea has produced over 950 boats from 22' to 36'  that are enjoyed by sailors of all types. Herreshoff Marine Museum - The museum was founded in 1971 by A. Sidney DeWolf Herreshoff and Rebecca Chase Herreshoff to preserve the accomplishments of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company. In 1992, the museum launched the  America's Cup Hall of Fame  to honor outstanding individuals of the America's Cup yacht race. The Herreshoff Marine Museum is located in Bristol, Rhode Island. The museum, situated near Narragansett Bay on the grounds where the manufacturing company once stood, has a collection of over sixty boats.
