SAILING THE UPPER KEYS

Sailing is the skillful art of controlling the motion of a sailboat, across a body of water. The force of the WIND on the SAILS propels sailing vessels. Land to Sea

Land and sea breezes are caused by the difference in temperature between the land and the sea. Land cools and heats quicker than water. Thus, during the day the land is warmer than the water and during the night the land is cooler. Since cooler air is heaver than warm, the colder air will flow toward and displace the warm air. Thus, during the night and early morning as the land cools, a breeze will be felt traveling from land out to sea (land breeze) and during the afternoon, as the land warms, a breeze will be felt traveling from the sea to the land (sea breeze)

The annual Miami to Key Largo Race was first held in 1956 with 33 boats. There are as many as 200 boats participating in the race. The race start south of the Rickenbacker Causeway in Miami and finishes at Jewfish Creek off Key Largo.
