The islands of Keys are exposed, fossilized remnant of a coral reef that was formed during a period of higher sea level and then uncovered and eroded during a subsequent ice age. The highest elevation is a slight ridge forming the spine of the island, which rises to as high as about 15 feet. The land slopes from the spine down to sea level on the oceanside and bayside.
My earliest memories are of the sea shore. I was barely able to walk, but rember the endless beach of Fire Island. The sea gulls taking off as I chased them. With the sea gulls circling above me in the sky. Other gulls would land and the game would begin. The beach is the prime attraction. With miles of sand touching the gentle waves of the Atlantic Ocean, and the prospect of great fishing, swimming, and surfing.
What the locals call "The Beach" is actually a wide sandbar jutting out into the ocean close to Holiday Isle. There's only one way to get there - by boat.The sandbar is like 1/2 mile off shore. The sandbar is the mother of all raft-up locations.
A beach is a geological landform along the shoreline of a body of water. It usually consists of loose particles which are often composed of rock, such as sand, gravel, or coral. The particles of which the beach is composed can sometimes instead have biological origins, such as shell fragments or organic fragments.
Beach bum is a term used to denote a subculture, the characteristics of which often include aspects of but do not necessarily extend to the surfers, the stoners or the hippie subcultures. Jimmy Buffett is a famous archetypal beach bum.
The members of this subculture are typically ocean and beach-going people who enjoy spending spare time sitting or relaxing on a beach. As such, the life of a beach bum is usually one of leisure. This holds true if the particular beach bum is a local, a retiree, a vacationer, or just someone who enjoys life by the ocean.
