Key Largo

It's eighteen miles to Key Largo once you leave the mainland, and you drive through undeveloped mangrove and everglades savannahs the whole way. Ths passage is called the Eighteen Mile Stretch and it makes a beautiful buffer zone between the congested streets of City of Miami / Dade and the Florida Keys. Look for wading birds such as egrets, herons, and roseate spoonbills. Sun Rise and Sun Set is beautiful over the everglade savannahs.
Key Largo is the first of the Florida Key islands, located about an hour from Miami. The largest of these numerous islands, Key Largo is also the longest island in the Keys. The population of Key Largo tops 12,000 full time residents. Bordered by the Everglades National Park on one side and the fabulous waters of the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Take a walk in the shoes of Humphrey Bogart on Key Largo, where two of his movies were filmed.  A trip to the famous John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is the perfect place to do nature walks, snorkeling and swimming. Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary, the only living coral reef in the continental United States. The rich underwater life and a number of wrecks attract snorkelers and scuba divers.
 

KEYS HISTORY  HISTORY OF THE FLORIDA KEYS

Spanish explorers first set foot on this area in the early 1500's. Key Largo is the first island in the long line moving away from the Florida mainland. The Spaniards named it "Cayo Largo" (Island Long) because it was such a large island. Over the years it has been a haven for pirates and smugglers and many shipwrecks occurred near its shores.

Key Largo: Health & Safety

1. Have plenty of drinking water and sunscreen on hand, as the sun is intense, and burning occurs at a faster rate than in lesser latitudes.
2. If you plan to do any diving or snorkeling, be sure the boat you are on is equipped with the required red and white "Diver Down" flags. 
3. The usual precautions, such as locking your car doors, keeping valuables out of sight, and awareness of your surroundings, contribute to tourist safety.
