KAYAKING OCEAN POINTE
Spanish word for Key Largo "Cayo Largo" or Long Island, because of the island's size. It is the largest of the Florida Keys at 22,000 acres. Key Largo was once a series of small islands, but during railroad construction in the early twentieth century, fill was dumped between the islets and the result was one long continual land mass. We now call this Key Largo, from mile marker 106 down to the town of Tavernier, around Mile Marker 93.

A kayack trip is both educational and inspirational.Kayaking is the vantage point to endless visual masterpiece of the fragile ecosystem of the Florida Bay. There are natural tunnels of the mangrove canopies, and the surrel beauty beneath the water.
Mangrove forests are one of Upper Key's most important natural features. The mangrove tree has adapted so well to living in a saltwater environment. It is the prevalent plant found in shoreline areas regularly washed by low tidal wave action. Trapping detritus with their roots, the trees also provide food and habitat for a variety of crabs, fish, mollusks, and insects.
The Red mangrove specie is prevalent in the Florida Keys. The red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) is the most dominant member and the species found nearest to the water. It has elliptical dark green leaves and long green seed pods that drop into the water and can float for miles before taking root. The tallest member of the mangrove family, usually growing to an average of 20 feet, it anchors itself against the tide with hundreds of reddish-brown prop roots that arch from the trunk and take hold of the muck below the water.
