SAILING THE UPPER KEYS

The 54th Miami to Key Largo Race is set for April 18, 2009. This unique race starts at 8:00 AM just south of the Rickenbacker Causeway. This race puts 120 boats on a single start. Its roughly a 45 mile point to point race down Biscayne Bay to Key Largo. This trip included passage through Card sound and Barnes Sound. Central Bay is the largest part of the bay. It is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by, a series of shallow flats separated by tidal flow channels, stretching from the south end of Key Biscayne to the Ragged Keys at the north end of the Florida Keys.

To me, those were good times. I can still see the clear, tourquoise water of the Florida Keys, I can feel the wind and the sea spray. In the distance I can see the old house on stilts there out by Fowey Rock. A vista of beauty - Stiltsville which is a row of house high up on pilings in the bay and the historic Cape Florida lighthouse. Dream - this was an area of ferocious storms and uncharted waters.  Hidden sandbars and submerged reefs, were a hazard to early sailors, causing hundreds of shipwrecks along the Straits of Florida.
