General Information about Pelicans
The Eastern Brown Pelican, also known as the American Brown Pelican or Common Pelican is a large bird yet the smallest of the world’s eight Pelican species. The Brown Pelican has an average weight of 8-10 lbs, measures 4 ft. in length with a magnificent wingspan of 6 ½ to 7 ½ ft. and now makes it home throughout southern Florida.
Pelecanus occidentalis - The Brown Pelican has an enormous bill and expandable throat pouch to catch fish under water. Unlike other pelicans, the Brown Pelican captures its prey by way of a spectacular head-first dive in the water from considerable heights.
The brown pelican has an 18-inch long bill and large throat pouch. Its head is white in front and dark brown behind, extending down the neck and back. During the breeding season, the white plumage turns a vibrant yellowish-gold color. Silver-gray feathers cover the rest of the pelican's body. The brown pelican weighs about 9 pounds and has a 6-foot wingspan.
Habitat Sandy coastal beaches and lagoons, waterfronts and pilings, and rocky cliffs. Brown pelicans are coastal birds that inhabit the Pacific, Atlantic, and gulf coasts. They are rarely found inland. Nesting Habitat: Brown Pelicans nest on remote natural and dredged-material islands along the coast. Nests are built on the ground, in grasses or marsh, and occasionally in small shrubs or trees.
In Florida, Brown Pelicans nest on mangrove islands, building large bulky nests from sticks and vegetation. Brown Pelicans may gather so much nest material that they may eventually defoliate the island. Where mangroves are not available, Brown Pelicans may build their nests in shrubs or on the ground in shallow scrapes lined with feathers or debris. On the West Coast, nests are typically found on the ground on steep rocky slopes.
The Brown Pelican can hold about three gallons of water (and fish) in its pouch.
The Brown Pelican incubates its eggs in an unusual manner; it covers them with its webbed feet. This practice was detrimental to the species when the pesticide DDT was in common use. This pesticide caused thinning of the eggshells resulting in so many broken eggs that the species became endangered.
They have air sacks beneath their skin and in their bones that make them very buoyant.
Though adult pelicans may consume as much as four pounds of fish per day, they do not compete with sport or commercial fishermen because of type of fish they eat.
Gulls will sometimes try to steal the pelican’s catch by snatching fish right from its pouch. The gull may even land on the pelican’s head and await its opportunity.
Brown pelicans are meat eaters. The brown pelican can spot fish from 20-60 feet in the air. When it spots a fish, it dives into the water and the impact of the dive could kill any regular bird. The pelican has air pockets in its body that protect it. It hunts during the day and prefers fish that swim close to the surface of the water. These fish include anchovies, herring, Pacific mackerel, minnows and sardines.
Brown Pelicans build their nest near the water to be near their food supply. When a baby pelican hatches they don't open their eyes for one or two days. They are not very attractive because their skin in wrinkled and they have no feathers. The parents must feed and care for their helpless babies. After five weeks they grow feathers and begin to learn to fly. When they learn how to fly, they can get their own food.
The birds, depending almost entirely on fish for food, scoop up quantities of water into their pouches as they seize prey from salt water. As the bill is elevated the water dribbles from the mandibles, and the pouch contracts as fish are swallowed. Five pounds of fish a day is the average consumption of a one-month old pelican.
Reproduction
The 2 to 4 white eggs have a rough chalky shell that require about a month to hatch. The young are naked and black when hatched. As they become larger, they push their bills so deeply into the pouch of the parent while feeding on regurgitated fish. Young pelicans are fed for about nine weeks. During this time, each youth will consume about 150 pounds of fish.
Male pelicans pick out the nesting sites and perform an "advertising" display which attracts the females. Once a pair forms a bond, overt communiction between them is minimal. Pelican nesting peaks during March and April; nests are in colonies either in trees, bushes, or on the ground. Those placed in trees are made of reeds, grasses, straw, and sticks; if on the ground, nests consist of a shallow scrape lined with feathers and a rim of soil built 4-10'' above the ground. Brown Pelicans lay 2-3 chalky white eggs. Incubation is about 28-30 days; young walk out of the nests on the ground about 35 days after hatching but do not leave treetop nests until about 63 -88 days for their first flight.
First breeds at age 3 years or older. Nests in colonies.
Nest: Site is on ground or cliff of island, or on low trees such as mangroves. Nest (built by female, with material gathered by male) may be simple scrape in soil, heap of debris with depression at top, or large stick nest in tree.
Eggs: 3, sometimes 2-4. White, becoming nest-stained. Incubation by both sexes, roughly 28-30 days.
Young: Both parents feed young. Young may leave ground nests after about 5 weeks and gather in groups, where returning parents apparently can recognize own offspring. Young may remain in tree nests longer (perhaps up to 9 weeks) before clambering about in branches. Age at first flight varies, reportedly 9-12 weeks or more. Adults continue to feed young for some time after they leave colony. 1 brood per year.
Brown pelicans have few natural enemies. Although ground nests are sometimes destroyed by hurricanes, flooding, or other natural disasters, the biggest threat to pelican survival comes from man. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, pelicans were hunted for their feathers, which adorned women's clothing, particularly hats. During the food shortages following World War I, fishermen claimed pelicans were decimating the commercial fishery resource and slaughtered them by the thousands. The nests were also frequently raided for eggs. With the advent and widespread use of pesticides such as DDT in the 1940s, pelican populations plummeted due to lack of breeding success. DDT, picked up by pelicans eating contaminated fish, caused the birds to lay eggs with shells so thin they broke during incubation.
Any of about eight species constituting the genus Pelecanus (family Pelecanidae), white or brown birds distinguished by a large, elastic throat pouch. Some species are 70 in. (180 cm) long, have a wingspan of 10 ft (3 m), and weigh up to 30 lbs (13 kg). Most species drive fish into shallow water and, using the pouch as a dip net, scoop them up and immediately swallow them. Pelicans inhabit freshwaters and seacoasts in many parts of the world; they breed in colonies on islands, laying one to four eggs in a stick nest. Chicks thrust their bills down the parent's gullet to obtain regurgitated food.
Winter: But the greater number spend the remainder of the summer, fall, and winter traveling about in large flocks, young and old usually in flocks by themselves along the coasts of Florida and the Gulf States, resorting to the inland lakes to fish and resting in long lines on the sand bars, mud flats, or beaches of the outer islands. They are particularly abundant among the shallow bays of southern Florida, among the Florida Keys, and in the great bird reservations of the Louisiana coast, where food fish are abundant and where they spend their leisure season in the congenial, if not always friendly, companionship of the royal terns, laughing gulls, man-o-war-birds, and Florida cormorants.

A hurricane is a tropical system with maximum sustained winds of at least 74 mph. At the center of the hurricane is an "eye" that varies in size but is commonly 20 to 30 miles wide. While the storm itself may extend out from the eye several hundred miles, hurricane force winds (74 mph) routinely extend 50 to 100 miles out of the eye. Atlantic hurricanes "spin" in a counter clockwise rotation that is started by the rotation of the earth.
