KEY LARGO DIVE SITES

Key Largo is known for its shallow reefs and deep wrecks. The many reefs provide world class diving for scuba divers of all ages and skills. The primary attraction of snorkeling is the opportunity to observe underwater life in a natural setting. This may include coral reef and their denizens, such as fish. The deep wrecks offer the some of the best wreck diving in the world. A trail of historic shipwrecks is scattered along the treacherous coral reefs. These shipsare buried in the sandy shallows off the Florida Keys. Each wreck has a story to tell. They may tell us about individuals who came before us. Why they came here, and their difficulty in navigating these waters. There are many reasons why these ships lie on the bottom of the sea. Was it an inability to accurately determine position, poor charts, lack of navigational aids (lighthouses and buoys), unpredictable currents, lack of wind, storms, or just human error. SAN PEDRO: Mile Marker:  77 Location: 1 1/4 miles South of Indian Key

The San Pedro was a Spanish gallon ship. It was heading for Spain from the New World. After the fleet left Havana harbor, a hurricane (1733) struck. The storm drive 21 galleons onto the reefs. Nearly the entire fleet was sunk along with a cargo of treasure. Each ship left behind a large pile of ballast stones, timbers, and their treasure. The colossa indians salvage these ships for Spain.Today divers can still find coral-encrusted coins, pottery, and other ancient artifacts. It is said that much of the treasure from the Spanish ships yet remains submerged and available. The San Pedro is Florida’s second Underwater Archaeological Preserve. The San Pedro has been reduced to a large pile of rocks, with  old timbers. The ballast stones have numerous coral heads growing from them. Several concrete cannons and a 17th century anchor were added to enhance the dive and improve fish nesting options.
